Landscape Renovation: Where Should You Start With an Overgrown Yard?
October 20, 2026

You can see that your yard needs a change. The shrubs have outgrown the beds, the path feels disconnected, or a corner of the property never gets used. What is harder to see is where to begin.
A landscape renovation does not have to start with replacing everything. Start by deciding how you want the space to feel and what you would like it to do for your life.
Choose one outcome that matters most
Finish this sentence: “I would enjoy my yard more if…” Maybe you want a welcoming entrance, more privacy, a comfortable route through the garden, or planting that feels manageable. Choose your first priority before collecting a long shopping list.
Then identify what already works. A favorite tree, a useful path, or a good view can give the new landscape a starting point. Tell your contractor what you want to preserve as clearly as what you want removed.
Understand the property before choosing plants
UGA Extension recommends evaluating the site, including light, water movement, and existing plants, before developing a landscape plan. A plant that looks right in a photograph may not suit the conditions beside your home.
Watch which areas receive sun and shade. Notice where water collects after rain and where people naturally walk. Bring those observations to the consultation. Soil testing and a closer assessment may help guide planting decisions.
Look for the connections
Consider the journey from your driveway to the front door, or from the back door to the place you would like to sit. Does the route feel clear? Do the planting beds frame it? Does a change in level interrupt it?
Sometimes a renovation is mainly about refreshed beds and lawn edges. Other properties call for a coordinated conversation about a retaining wall, a paver patio, and planting that brings the pieces together.
Can you renovate in phases?
Yes, a project can be planned around priorities and an agreed scope. Ask which work should come first and which improvements can wait. For example, it makes sense to discuss access for future construction before investing in planting along that route.
Share a budget range you are comfortable discussing. Ask for a clear explanation of what the proposed phase includes, what remains for later, and what assumptions could change the scope.
What should you bring to a consultation?
- Photos of the areas you want to change.
- Your top two or three goals.
- A list of features and plants you hope to keep.
- A few inspiration images and a realistic sense of ongoing upkeep.
